1. What is a file?

other. It is also termed as ‘Cut and paste’. In this process

destination.
6. What is the use of wild
card characters?
Sometimes, we need to search
a file in a more specific manner. In such
situation, we can use wild
card characters along with the file name to
be searched. The well-known wild card characters
are * and ?.

1. Write all the steps to copy a file.
Following are the steps to copy a file.
Step 1:
Go to the location from where the file is to be copied.
Step 2: Select the file and right click on it.
Step 3: Select the copy option from the dropdown menu.
Step 4: Go to the location, where the copy of the file
is to be placed.
Step 5: Right click on the empty area and click on the
paste option

window.
Step 2: Enter the file name to be searched
in the system in the ‘Search
Computer’ box.
Step 3: The computer will look for all the
files throughout the system and
show the result in the window.
4. Write all the steps:
(a) to play an audio CD/audio file on window
media player.
(b) to play a video CD/DVD/video file on VLC
(a) To play an audio CD or an audio file follow these steps.
Step 1: Insert the audio CD in the DVD
drive.
Step 2: Click the ‘Windows media player’
icon. It will open the window
media player.
Step 3: Click ‘file’ and then ‘open’. It
will display all the drives in the
system.
Step 4: Select the drive where your
favourite CD or audio file is present.
Step 5: Click open.
Step 6: It will display all the audio files
or folders of the selected drive.
Step 7: Select all the audio files and click
‘open’
Step 8: Windows media player will start
playing the songs and display
the title of the song it is playing on the screen.
(b) To play video files or a video
CD/DVD, perform the following steps.
Step 1: Insert
the video CD/DVD in the DVD drive.
Step 2: Click
the ‘VLC media player’ icon. It will open the VLC media
player.
Step 3: Click
‘media’ and then ‘Open file’. It will display all the drives of
the system.
Step 4: Select
the drive where the video CD/DVD or the video file is
present.
Step 5: Click
‘Open’
Step 6: It
will display all the video folders of the selected drive.
Step 7: Select
the video folder and click ‘Open’
Step 8: The
VLC media player will start playing the video file.

a) What do you mean by source drive and
destination drive?
Source drive is the drive from which the file is to be
copied. Destination
drive is the drive to which the file will be copied.
b) What are special purpose files?
There are some files available in the storage devices which
are not
created by the users. These are called special purpose files
and are
automatically transferred to the storage device while
installing the
system. These are used to control various activities of the
computer
system. For example, command.com, config.sys etc.
c) What do you mean by ordinary files?
These files are temporary files created for general purposes.
They
remain on the storage device until the purpose is solved
completely.
After the requirement is over these files are deleted from
the system.
Some example of ordinary files are notepad files, WordPad
files, songs
and video etc.
d) What are the different parts of a file name?
A file name contains two parts. The first part is the primary
name of the
file and the second part is the secondary name or extension
of a file.
f) What are the fundamental operations on a
file ?
Fundamental operations on a file are, i) viewing data, ii)
copying a file,
iii) moving a file, iv) deleting a file and v) playing a
file.
g) What is the purpose of copying a file?
If an original file gets corrupted due to any adverse
situation, then the
copy of the file will meet our requirements. For this purpose
a file is
copied.
V. Long questions and answers.
a) Write the steps to delete a file.
The steps to be followed to delete a file are
Step 1: Select and double click the source
drive, where the file is
present.
Step 2: Select the file to be deleted.
Step 3: Click the right button of the mouse.
Step 4: Click the ‘Delete’ button from the
dropdown menu.
Thus the selected file will be deleted.
b) Write the steps for copying a file from a
drive to a Pen drive.
Following steps are to be followed while copying a file from
a drive to
a pen drive.
Step 1: Double click on the computer icon on
the desktop.
Step 2: Select and double click on the source
drive and then on the
required file.
Step 3: Select the file name and click the
right button of the mouse.
Step 4: Click the copy option from the
dropdown menu.
Step 5: Select and double click on the
destination drive (removable
Drive). It will display all the files and folders.
Step 6: Keep the pointer in the blank space
of the drive and click the
right button of mouse.
Step 7: Select the paste option from the
drop-down menu.
Thus the file will be copied in the pen drive.
c) Write the steps to move a file from one
drive to another drive.
Following steps shall be performed while moving a file from
one drive
to another drive.
Step 1: Double click on the computer icon on
the desktop.
Step 2: Select and double click on the
source drive and then on the
required file.
Step 3: Select the file name and click the
right button of the mouse.
Step 4: Click the cut option from the
dropdown menu.
Step 5: Select and double click on the
destination drive. It will display
all the files and folders.
Step 6: Keep the pointer in the blank space
of the drive and click the
right button of mouse.
Step 7: Select the paste option from the
dropdown menu.
Thus the file will be available in another drive.
